How long does it take to biodegrade?
It depends on the grain size, the conditions (acidity, temperature etc) and your definition of
fully biodegraded, but for a sensible answer we say 60 days to a year. But it is already safe
for ingestion by wildlife and marine life.
What’s it made of and why is it different to normal glitter?
It is made from cellulose which is in essence a biodegradable plastic. Algae is made of
roughly the same stuff. It behaves exactly the same as traditional glitter, which is normally
made from PVC or PET based plastic or even metal.
OK so it’s biodegradable but what about sustainability, GM etc.?
The glitter is derived from sustainable sources, does not contain genetically modified
materials or materials obtained from genetically modified organisms.
Is it as glittery / sparkly as normal glitter?
Our glitter offers the same precision cut and highly reflective properties as a conventional
Can you use it the same as normal glitter?
Yes, in both solvent and water based applications, it behaves the same as normal glitter.
Is it safe to put on the skin / face / around the eyes?
Yes. Glitterlution is TOTALLY APPROVED FOR COSMETIC USE although we recommend 150 microns or smaller for safe use around the eyes.
Under what circumstances does it biodegrade?
All natural environments, including waste water and marine. If left in outdoor conditions not
optimum for biodegrading (for example a forest floor or a beach), you can pretty safely say
that it will not take long to reach the conditions needed - due to it’s tiny size, it doesn’t take
much wind / rain / water to get the glitter into the system pretty quickly
